The Monster in the Dark (#58)

This monstrous shape is formed from clouds of gases sculpted into shapes by the intense radiation from newly formed stars embedded in the clouds. The colours depict ionised gases of hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur; they are not true colours but are composed by the author to make a pretty picture.

The image comprises 15 hours of data from an eight-inch telescope. It has been featured in several magazines and journals.
