A new, free online tool to practise and test your understanding of the exposure triangle has been released by SCC regular guest speaker Joe Houghton...

The Exposure Triangle, available to anyone for free at https://exposuretriangle.houghtonphoto.com/, invites you to test drive changing the aperture, shutter speed and ISO values via on-screen dials, and watch the effects that each move has on a photo in real time.

Choose your sample photo from portrait, landscape, street, lakeside or macro, or even upload your own photograph.

Great for beginners...

In Beginner mode, each turn of the dial will be accompanied by a short explanation of what you did and what just happened - "You widened the aperture from f/4 to f/2.8: a stop more light, so the picture's brighter. The sharp zone now runs from 44.9 cm to 45.1 cm, so the hedge is softer." Detail mode will give more advanced information on what happened.

It's a fantastic way to learn visually what effects the dials have, and what the exposure triangle means in practice.

Not ready for full manual mode? Change to programme mode, or select aperture or shutter priority before you begin.

Fun for the more experienced...

Think you already know the exposure triangle? Prove it by selecting a challenge!

You can even select a camera from the dropdown menu, and choose your focal length, and whether you are using a tripod - every choice you make will affect how your chosen photo displays.

Give it a try now...
